Buying Health Supplements Can Be a Mind Field

by Andrew on February 24, 2011

Today I was out looking to buy some multivitamins and other health supplements for myself.  Historically I have tried to stay away from buying health supplements.  I don’t have a particular problem with them, but I like to try and think that I can get all I need from just eating a natural healthy diet.

Eating Health Food Instead of Buying Supplements

I like to think that if God made me and he made all the food in the World that I can eat then he would provide me with the right types of food to make my body healthy and work at it’s optimum.

I still think that there is very sound logic in that thinking.

After all, all these man made multivitamins and supplements weren’t around when  man hit the earth, were they?  I don’t think Adam and Even had a local health food store that they went to to get their extra supplies of things to keep them fit and healthy.

The Problem With Food Today

As I say, I still think that in theory the idea of not having any supplements and just eating the right type of food is a sound theory.  However, in this day and age, in practice, I feel it is almost impossible to stick to this and get all the nutrients your body needs.

I think that this is especially the case if you live in the a big city of a “1st world country”.  The fact is that you can be trying your best to eat and drink a healthy diet and you can be eating lots of fruit and vegetables, nuts and everything else that is recommended that you eat;  but, how much nutrition are you actually getting from that food?

Do the apples you buy in the local supermarket compare to the nutrition you would get from home grown organic apples?  I don’t think so.  The amount of extras you get when you try to buy “healthy” food from a supermarket is hard to comprehend.

The Supermarkets Know What Sells

Your local supermarket probably spends a lot of time analysing what sells and what doesn’t and much of there research reveals that people are drawn towards the bright red, large, juicy looking apple, rather than the smaller one that is kind of an off reddish color.

More times than not, these gorgeous, large, bright fruit only look that way because they have been artificially created to look that way.  They are not half as healthy as their little, odd shaped cousin sitting beside them in the organic section.

On that note, you can’t always be 100% confident with what you are buying from the organic section either.  Just how “organic” it actually is will depend on what the law of the particular land you live in, says can be classed as “organic”.

The best bet is to grow the stuff yourself and we all know that this just isn’t practical for many of us.

This is why I say that, unfortunately, as much as I would like to stick to my high ground and say I am getting all my nutrients from food I eat and not from any supplements, I find it difficult to see how that is possible.

However, in certain parts of the World this might be easier than others.  What do you think?
